Pink Discharge: Top 6 Common Reasons For Experiencing Light Spotting

Pink spotting

Pink discharge is considered to be one of the most unpleasant topics among many women. Most of them feel safe, knowing that spotting is a usual thing and is common in many women. Others are afraid to start talking about the slight discomfort they experience, as they believe that it is not a good sign.

If you have any doubts, you can consult your doctor, but before that read about the main causes of discharges. Who knows, perhaps you have one of them…

Discharge can occur because of anything: pregnancy, ovulation, diets, menopause and even the material of your underwear. However, they are more likely due to periods and are a normal part of most women’s lives.

Reasons #1 – Ovulation

Pink discharge due to ovulation generally occurs about two weeks after the last menstrual period of a woman. The ovarian follicle ruptures when the eggis released. This causes a small hole, which allows some blood to escape from the vagina. Usually bleeding lasts for a couple of hours and is minor.

Minor spotting can also be related to hormones, when during ovulation the body of a woman increases the output of estrogen and makes the uterine lining shed. If you have a discharge, there is nothing that you should be afraid of, because this is the sign of your fertility.

Reason # 2 – Implantation (Pregnancy)

Pregnancy (implantation) is one of the causes of pink discharge. This is an early sign of conception. It occurs between 1-2 weeks after the egg has been fertilized by the sperm. The egg implants itself into the blood and lining of the uterine wall. Not all women experience spotting during this process. Approximately only 30% of them have a discharge.

A small amount of blood makes its way through the cervix out of the vagina. It can be either light pink or dark brown.

Reason # 3 – Menstruation

When the body of a woman starts releasing its unfertilized egg in the beginning of a menstrual period, the blood flow shows up as a pink spotting. This is why many women confuse the beginning of menstruation with pregnancy bleeding (implantation).

How do you differentiate them? Implantation spotting lasts longer than one day. Premenstrual spotting involves a heavier menstrual flow.

Reason # 4 – Infections

Infections are rare causes of discharge. These could be infections of the uterus, vagina, cervix, fallopian tubes or ovaries. They are usually caused by sexually transmitted diseases. When a woman is experiencing pink spotting and has ruled out menstruation, ovulation and pregnancy are the most possible reasons. She should consult a professional to prevent serious consequences.

Reason # 5 – Afterbirth Bleeding

Pink vaginal discharges are common to women who have given birth to children. After the baby is expelled during labor, the tissue is pushed out of the woman’s body as well.  A woman can experience bleeding that is very similar to a very heavy period. This usually lasts for several days after the delivery.

After a few days, this pink discharge gradually lightens in color, but still remains rather heavy. The bleeding may be seen for a few days. In some women, it lasts for nearly one week lightening to a white color, because the bloody uterine lining is expelled.

Those women who keep experience rather heavy bleeding and very severe pain in the week after giving birth should seek medical attention.

Reason # 6 – Contraceptives

Spotting and bleeding in between periods can also be caused by pills or other forms of contraceptives used by a woman. When a woman has a contraceptive implant or uses pills to control possible pregnancy, she may experience spotting at any time. Why? Because all of these contraceptives not only help to control birth, but also disrupt the period cycle of a woman.

This is frequently the case with an implant. Spotting can be random and last for a while. This is rather inconvenient for any woman. Usually doctors prescribe pills that help to regulate the bleeding.

Pink discharge can be caused by different factors. Some of them are serious, while others are not. But if you feel that discharges are not normal for your body and cycle, you should consult a professional to know for sure.
