The Leading Causes of Brown Discharge Between Periods

Light brown spotting between periods

A brown discharge between periods is normal for most women so there’s no need to be overly concerned. However, what’s not normal is when it changes in quantity or color, or begins to smell bad. If you’re experiencing any of these symptoms there’s no need to panic since you’re not likely going to die from the discharge and you won’t need to be hospitalized.

These symptoms are usually the result of an infection, but there could be other causes such as poor hygiene or a venereal disease. Poor hygiene can be caused by improper cleaning of the vagina which can easily be corrected over time. But if you think you may have contracted a venereal disease, you should speak with your doctor as soon as possible so you don’t infect your partner.

Some of the Causes of Brown Discharge Between Periods

Things like viruses, yeast infections, bacterial infections and sexually transmitted diseases can cause vulvovaginitis which is an infection of the vagina. It’s very common among women of all ages so there’s no need for you to feel embarrassed when you speak to your doctor. In most cases, a brown discharge between your periods can be easily treated at home.

One of the most common causes of brown discharge is a simple yeast infection, especially if it’s extreme and occurs around the time of your menstrual cycle. A yeast infection may have a slightly yeasty odor so it’s easy to identify. The good news is you can cure a yeast infection naturally. There are many at-home-treatments which will effectively eliminate a yeast infection so it doesn’t occur again.

Bacteria called Candida albicans can also cause a brown discharge. There are a lot of over-the-counter products you can purchase to treat Candida albicans, but they only treat the symptoms. You need something that will get to the root of the problem so you may want to visit your doctor so he or she can prescribe medication.

Bacterial vaginosis is another cause of vulvovaginitis. If you have a discharge that’s yellow or light-brown and smells like fish, you could have bacterial vaginosis. This type of bacteria can be treated at home and if it’s done correctly, it’ll permanently fix the problem.

Sexually Transmitted Diseases Can Cause a Brown Discharge Between Periods

Pelvic inflammatory disease symptoms could also produce a brown discharge. Pelvic inflammatory disease is also known as PID and it’s usually accompanied by a foul order. PID is a bacterial infection of the fallopian tubes, uterus or the ovaries.

You can tell if you have PID if you experience bleeding after sexual intercourse, it is painful to urinate or if you suffer from pain in the pelvis or lower back. You should visit your doctor as soon as possible if you think you have PID because it is caused by a sexually transmitted disease. This type of STD is most often caused by the spread of two types of bacteria, gonorrhea and chlamydia.

Finally, genital warts are another cause of brown discharge between periods. If you experience itching in the vagina or if you bleed heavily after sex, you could have genital warts. Genital warts are a sexually transmitted disease that causes a soft wart like growth on the vagina. It is a common viral skin disease, so you should see your doctor as soon as possible if you think you have this type of STD.
